5 date ideas for students on a budget

First of all, let me start by saying ignore anyone who tells you stargazing will be fun to do on a date. It’s impractical in student accommodation, and unless you’re dating Copernicus, they won't care. They might tell you they’d love to spend an hour on their backs seeing stars, but I promise you they’re not talking about finding fucking Orion’s belt.

Ok with that out of the way, let’s crack on.

1) Attempt to break a Guinness World Record.

Did you know the Guinness Record for most powdered doughnuts eaten in 3 minutes without licking your lips is 8? Doesn’t that sound like a record capable of being beaten to you? You and your date could take turns going for the record or even compete against each other to decide who’s the best worse lip-licker.

2) Test your knowledge.

Many bars and pubs have free trivia nights, and some even give away free food. You might not win – not up against Quizzas with Attitude, champions for the last 16 weeks in a row – but the feeling you’ll get for your date after they guess the right answer to ‘what’s the chemical symbol for mercury’ will last at least three more dates.

3) Make a treasure hunt.

Whether you use skittles, gifts or post-it notes with cute notes written on them, this idea is all about the thrill of the hunt for your date and the thrill of stifling a laugh as you say ‘colder… colder… you’re getting freezing’ from time to time for you.

4) Try/ make new drinks with them.

Many people try a cosmo or a G&T and stick with it for life. Not you though. You’re an adventurer, someone who knows their Aperol from their absinthe, and now you’re willing to share your knowledge with your s/o at a bar or in your student kitchen. The former if you’ve got cash, the latter if not. Just pray Wikipedia got it right or you'll look a right mug.

5) Create a blanket fort.

The idea of building your own house is as cool as it is largely unobtainable, so the next best thing is a blanket fort. Grab a few blankets and sheets and in no time you can have your own little Taj Mahal. Bring in snacks and your laptop and you'll never have a reason to leave!
